ATA's Accreditation Program for Online Patient Consultations

Accrediting Safe, Online Health Care Services

ATA’s Accreditation Program for Online Patient Consultations recognizes organizations providing online, real-time patient health services that comply with operational, clinical and consumer-related standards.  The program promotes patient safety, transparency of operations and adherence to all relevant laws and regulations.  Approved organizations proudly display the ATA Seal of Accreditation, a benchmark to assure patients, payers and consumers that the organization’s online patient consultative services meets the standards and guidance established for the program.

The program has been developed over the past two years in consultation with providers, medical societies, consumer groups, payers and regulators.  The program is designed to guide organizations toward quality, safety and excellence. Accreditation provides validation and increased confidence to private payers, employers, government regulators and consumers. Organizations earning the ATA Seal of Accreditation will be publicly acknowledged and widely promoted.

ATA’s accreditation program is available to both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations including primary and specialty service providers, health systems or business enterprises that deliver online consultative services directly to U.S. consumers.  In the future, the program will be expanded to include Canada as well. Such services are provided by licensed health care professionals using real-time (live interactions) two-way video or audio technologies, which may be supplemented with asynchronous (i.e. email) or other telecommunication technologies.

The program accredits consultation sites, services and organizations that are directly visible to consumers and patients. Examples of such organizations include:
  • A medical institution that offers a patient portal for online, real-time health care consultations with its name on the online site.  The institution may contract with a separate organization to use a technology platform and/or to provide patient consultative services to the institution’s patient base.
  • A service provider company that operates an online business to provide direct to consumer, real-time patient consultative services using their proprietary platform and either employed or contracted healthcare providers.
  • An employer that provides its employees with online, real-time telehealth services via a platform and/or patient consultative services provided by a contracted organization or service provider(s).
ATA does not provide accreditation for “white-labeled” services including companies that solely provide telecommunications or a technology platform for use in such services.  ATA also does not separately accredit subcontracted professionals that provide services on behalf of such sites.  Such an example would include an organization that provides a back-end telehealth platform that is re-branded and used by another organization or group of health care providers for online, real-time patient consultative services.

The Program is open to members and non-members. Click here to register and receive program information.

Period of Accreditation

ATA accreditation is granted for a three year period and requires an Annual Report.

Accreditation Process

  1. Organizations seeking accreditation must complete the online Registration Form (click here).  Once received, ATA will forward the Application and Accreditation Manual including the Rules and Terms, Standards, and associated fees.
  2. Applicants will then submit the Application with required documentation and the specified Application Fee to ATA.
  3. ATA will conduct an independent Survey/Review to assess compliance with ATA accreditation Standards and Guidances. Survey responses consist of four types of information: attestation, documentation, demonstration, and online resources.
  4. Once accredited, an Annual Review and three-year re-accreditation are performed.
