The 13th Annual International Meeting of the American Telemedicine Association took place at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, April 6-8, 2008. Over 2300 attendees from every corner of the United States and 45 other countries were present. The University of South Florida offered Continuing Education Credits for meeting attendees.
More than 350 peer-reviewed oral concurrents and poster presentations covered an array of subject areas within eight tracks. Expanded roundtable sessions enhanced the educational experience, as did a series of exhibitor/telemedicine case studies. |

ATA President Hon Pak, LTC MC USA, opened the meeting at a plenary on Sunday afternoon. The opening session included The Kenneth Bird Annual Distinguished Lecture given this year byby Louis J. Burns, Vice President of Intel and General Manager the company's Digital Health Group. Mr. Burns is responsible for leading Intel Corporation’s initiative to help transform global health care by connecting people and information.
A second keynote was given by The Honorable Ward Casscells, MD, Assistance Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. Dr. Casscells serves as the nation’s top official responsible for the healthcare of U.S. military forces.
The sunday plenary concluded with presentation of the USAMRMC Thurman award to James Henry "Red" Duke for his contribution to military telemedicine. |

Monday's plenary included a keynote presentation by Lee Woodruff, author of In an Instant: A Family’s Journey of Love and Healing. Lee spoke about her family’s difficult journey during her husband's critical brain injury. Bob Woodruff was seriously injured by an IED in Iraq while anchoring a broadcast for ABC World News Tonight. This experience led Lee and Bob to establish the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury to assist members of the military with cognitive rehabilitation and other care needs following traumatic brain injury suffered in service to their country.
The ATA Annual Awards were also presented during this plenary. |

Tuesday's annual business meeting included remarks by the ATA leadership and an update on the state of the Association by ATA Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan D. Linkous. A report from Nina Antoniotti, RN, MBA, PhD reviewed ATA's telemedicine standards initiative. Karen Rheuban, MD discussed recent telemedicine-legislation and ATA's policy activities.
This meeting also marked the official relationship between the ATA and the Canadian Society for Telehealth. The two association presidents, Hon Pak and Laurie Poole and the two executive directors, Jon Linkous and John Schinbein, signed a cooperative agreement pledging to work together and of mutual interest.
The meeting ended with remarks from Elizabeth Krupinski, PhD, Assistant Director of Program Evaluation at the University of Arizona and the incoming President of ATA.

ATA is planning on a number of educational events over the next year. The 2009 Annual Meeting will be held April 26-28, 2009 at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
