Training Program Accreditation

Since its inception in 1993, the American Telemedicine Association has served as a professional resource and an advocate for promoting access to health care for clients and health providers via the prudent and effective use of information and communication technology (ICT). One mechanism for implementing these objectives has been the development of appropriate clinical standards and professional practice policies. The establishment of Training Program Accreditation process is one of the next logical steps towards meeting the Association’s objectives.

Accreditation is a voluntary process of self-study and external review aimed at enhancing, and recognizing quality in telemedicine/telehealth/e-health training programs. It serves to protect their integrity and effectiveness for the benefit of the learners and society at large. The accreditation process encourages institutional freedom and continuous quality improvement of training programs.

Accreditation involves an objective assessment of the applicant program’s achievement in designing and implementing a professional training program. The accreditation body would not prescribe a program’s goals or processes. Instead, it proffers accreditation guidelines and principles. These include basic aspects considered essential to the success of any training program in telemedicine/telehealth/e-health. The programs themselves determine the nature of their goals, objectives and the means to achieve them. The Accreditation Committee (Committee) would reach an informed, fair and reasonable decision about each applicant program through an appropriate and critical analysis.

The goals of accreditation are two-fold:

  • To ensure that telemedicine/telehealth/e-health training programs in the United States and other countries meet acceptable standards of quality in terms of their content, methods, and resources
  • To provide formal recognition of training programs that meet such standards.
