The 16th Annual International Meeting of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) took place at the Tampa Convention Center, May 1-3, 2011. This was the largest event in ATA's history, with over 3600 attendees and 200 vendors from the United States and 48 other nations.  ATA 2011 is now, officially, the largest international meeting and tradeshow focusing exclusively on telemedicine, telehealth, mHealth and remote medical technologies.

The University of South Florida provided Continuing Medical Education credits for meeting attendees.

ATA 2011 was a premier forum for the latest peer-reviewed research, clinical outcomes, case studies and business models related to telemedicine and telehealth.  The meeting contained over 260 presentations, organized into 72 session and 8 topical tracks.  The event also included 12 pre-meeting Professional Development Courses providing training on the latest administrative, clinical and technical aspects of telemedicine.

The ATA 2011 Exposition was the association's largest to-date and was world's largest telemedicine tradeshow. Over 220 exhibitors displayed the latest developments in telemedicine technology, products and services. The showfloor was HUGE, with over 220,000 square feet of exhibit space. The meeting began with Dale Alverson, MD, President of the American Telemedicine Association, who welcomed attendees to Tampa. Dr. Alverson noted the the ongoing growth and adoption of telemedicine. "We are facing a perfect storm, leading to greater integration of telehealth technologies into mainstream healthcare." A. Stewart Ferguson, PhD, Vice President of ATA and ATA 2011 Program Chair, then gave a review of the meeting’s educational program.

The keynote speaker for this plenary Dr. Marty Cooper, inventor of the cellphone and mHealth Advocate. Dr. Cooper was interviewed on stage by David Pogue, consumer technology correspondent for the New York Times. These two speakers discussed the evolution of personal healthcare technology and the future opportunities for mobile health.

Tuesday’s plenary explored the "Human Touch of Telemedicine," with real patients describing their life-changing (and life-SAVING) experiences. (Short video clips recounting each patient's story are available below.) The plenary concluded with a keynote by Bernard A. Harris, Jr., MD, MBA, incoming President of the American Telemedicine Association, who discussed the goals and activities for the association in the coming year.
