The 15th Annual International Meeting of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) took place at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, May 16-18, 2010. Over 3100 attendees from around the United States and 35 countries attending the meeting, making this our biggest meeting to date and the world's largest telemedicine event. The University of South Florida provided Continuing Medical Education credits for meeting attendees.
ATA 2010 focused on outcomes and evidence for telemedicine and telehealth. The meeting will featured over 350 peer-reviewed presentations, covering the full spectrum of telemedicine-related subject areas and specialties. Bring ATA 2010 Home with Session Recordings
All concurrent sessions at ATA 2010 were being recorded and will soon be accessible to you 24/7 via the online ATA Live Learning Center, in Streaming Media format or for download even to your MP3 player. The sessions will contain the presenter’s audio fully synchronized to their PowerPoints, providing you with a true multimedia recreation of the event. User notes, online handouts and the MP3 file for downloads are just some of the additional features. The meeting began with Karen Rheuban, MD, President of the American Telemedicine Association, who welcomed attendees to San Antonio. Dr. Rheuban briefly spoke about her tenure as President of the association and the rapid growth of telemedicine. Telemedicine continues to grow as measured by institutional adoption rates, corporate sales of products and services and federal support. Certainly, media attention has increased, and the reason is clear. Telemedicine works and is becoming an essential element of the future of healthcare. Bernard Harris, Jr., MD, MBA, Vice President of ATA and ATA 2010 Program Chair, then gave a review of the meeting’s educational program.
The keynote speaker for this plenary was Major General James K. Gilman, Commanding General, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick. MG Gilman commented on the use of telemedicine and advanced medical technologies to support soldiers. MG Gilman concluded by presenting the MRMC Thurman Award for excellence in military telemedicine to COL Hon Pak, Chief Medical Information Officer of U.S. Army Medical Department.
The ATA Annual Awards were also presented during this plenary.
Rashid Bashshur, PhD, President Emeritus of ATA, presented the 2010 Class of Telemedicine Fellows. Induction into the ATA College of Fellows is a high honor that recognizes significant achievements in telemedicine, service to the general telemedicine community and service to ATA. Bonnie P. Britton, MSN, RN, Joseph D'Iorio and Charles R. Doarn, MBA were welcomed into the College. The plenary concluded with Ronald Weinstein, MD, Director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program being named as a new President Emeritus of the American Telemedicine Association

Tuesday began with a morning plenary, with breakfast provided by OptumHealth. The keynote speaker during the breakfast plenary was John Howe, III, MD, President and CEO of Project HOPE. Project HOPE is an international health foundation, with offices and programs in 35 countries on 5 continents. Dr. Howe discussed how his organization coordinates government agencies, non-governmental organizations and corporations to provide healthcare services in remote areas and disaster zones.
Next the American Telemedicine Association, represented by Dr. Rheuban and Jonathan Linkous, CEO, signed a memorandum of understanding with the AustralAsian Telemedicine Society (AATS.) This document pledges that the two organizations will work in collaboration to foster the development of international and cross border telemedicine.
The morning plenary concluded with a speech from Dale Alverson, MD, Incoming President of ATA, who shared his vision for the year ahead. Dr. Alverson identified the challenges ahead and argued passionately that now was the time to provide telehealth for all!
Tuesday also featured the Kenneth Bird Distinguished Lecture, delivered by Aneesh Chopra, Federal Chief Technology Officer of the United States. Chopra discussed the Obama Administration's positive views on telemedicine and revealed several initiatives the White House is developing to promote advanced remote medical technologies.
