EMS providers eye licensing compact to advance telehealth options
Health systems and emergency medical services providers are looking to develop telehealth programs that cross state lines may soon have a resource already available to physicians, nurses, physical therapists and psychologists: An interstate licensing compact.
Some 16 states have signed onto the Recognition of EMS Personnel Licensure Interstate CompAct, and nine more states are considering legislation to join the group. While the compact reached the 10-state threshold designed to trigger enactment in May 2017, its governing body, the Interstate Commission for EMS Personnel Practice Members, has yet to complete the rules and policies needed for the compact to go live. The commission has set a January 1, 2020 date to get that task completed.
